Info | In December 1997 Mexican leftist-opposition leader Cuauhtémoc Cárdenas of the Democratic Revolutionary Party (PRD) was sworn in as mayor of Mexico City, the first-ever elected mayor of North America's largest city. Previously, the president of Mexico had appointed the mayor. Having won the July 6 election in a landslide, with 47% of the vote, he had the largest margin of victory. Previously, he had served as a federal senator in Michoacán from 1974 to 1980 and their governor from 1980 to 1986, while a member of the PRI. He left the PRI and eventually helped found the leftist Party of the Democratic Revolution in 1989.
Cárdenas is the son of former President Lázaro Cárdenas del Río, and the father of current Michoacán Gov. Lázaro Cárdenas Batel.
