Info | Councilwoman Joan L. Krajewski is a life long Philadelphian born and raised in the community of Port Richmond and educated in the Philadelphia Parochial School system.
Joan Kwajewski has dedicated her life to public service. She began her career in 1972 as an investigator for the Philadelphia Department of Revenue, From 1977 until 1979, Joan served as President of Local 1660-School Board Employees, District Council 33, American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees' Union.
Joan has been the Ward leader of the 65th Ward since 1978. She was first elected to the Philadelphia City Council in 1979 and is now serving the constituents of the 6th District for her fifth term.
Joan was the first woman in Philadelphia history to hold the position of Majority Leader of the Philadelphia City Council and served in that capacity for two terms.
As prime sponsor for the first "Right to Know" bill in the nation, Joan has demonstrated her ability to build coalitions between business, labor and community organizations. In recognition of her outstanding public service, Joan has received awards from the Police and Fire Organizations, Senior Citizens' and Boys' Clubs, business, civic and fraternal organizations.
Currently, Joan serves as chairperson of Council's Standing Committee on Appropriations and serves as Vice Chair of the Public Safety Committee. She is also a member of the Committee on Public Property and Public Works, Licenses and Inspection Committee and the Special Committee on Parks, Recreation and Cultural Affairs.
Joan received national attention in 1994 for her efforts urging the need to remove the federally imposed prison cap. Joan served on the Mayor's Task Force investigating the city's 911 Emergency Response System which resulted in significant improvements to the system. Recently, Joan became a board member of Washington Savings Bank. She is also a member of the Glen Foerd Conservation Corporation and Chairs the Criminal Justice Advisory Committee.
Joan was selected "Best Councilperson" by Philadelphia Magazine in 1987, 1990, and 1991, singling her out for "outstanding constituent service and service to the City of Philadelphia as a whole" and was inducted into their Hall of Fame in 1993.
Joan has worked tirelessly and diligently to bring the best of City government to the sixth Councilmanic district for over a decade. Her record of over 50,000 constituent requests handled by her office is proud testimony to her record of public service to her Councilmanic district and to the City of Philadelphia.
