Scott Holcomb is running for Secretary of State to ensure that every vote is counted, to promote economic growth, and to protect Georgians from fraud.

Scott is a veteran, attorney, and a community leader.

Commitment to Service

Scott Holcomb's character was shaped by his family's commitment to service and to the protection of our nation's principles. His family came to America in the 1630s, and his forefathers have served in every war since the American Revolution.

Military service has shaped Scott's life from the very beginning. Scott's family made their home in Valdosta, Georgia while his father, Michael, was stationed at Moody Air Force Base. Michael, an Air Force Sergeant, deployed to Vietnam in February 1972, leaving behind his pregnant wife Katie and his 11 month old daughter Kimberly. Scott was born during his father's tour of duty.

Scott's parents taught him strong values, a hard work ethic, and a commitment to service. Scott started his first job when he was 13, delivering newspapers, and he has been working ever since. He has a broad range of work experiences in various industries, having worked in restaurants, factories, warehouses, the classroom and law offices.

Because of these varied experiences, Scott understands the importance of promoting economic growth and development in the private sector. As Secretary of State, Scott will ensure that his office works as a partner with the private sector to promote economic opportunity for all Georgians.

Military Service

Air National Guard

When Scott turned eighteen, he chose to follow in the family tradition by enlisting in the Air National Guard. An honor graduate from basic training at Lackland Air Force Base, he served in the Guard for six years while attending college and law school. He achieved the rank of Staff Sergeant, and was named the 1995 Airman of the Year by his squadron. In addition, he volunteered to serve in support of Operation Joint Guard, the peace-keeping mission in Bosnia, by relieving active duty airmen during the holidays.

Scott's Air National Guard service deepened his commitment to service and helped prepare him for leadership roles.

U.S. Army

After law school, Scott decided to continue on his path of service and earned a commission in the U.S. Army Judge Advocate General's Corps. He moved to Savannah and was assigned to the mighty 3rd Infantry Division at Fort Stewart, Georgia, where he helped soldiers, military retirees, and their family members with various legal issues.

Scott held several positions, including service as a legal assistance attorney, prosecutor, and the Chief of International Law. As the Chief of Operational Law, he helped prepare the Division for its peace-keeping deployment to Bosnia.

Scott volunteered to deploy to Bosnia, and he served with Task Force 3-15 at Camp McGovern in northern Bosnia from September 2000 until March 2001. He advised the Commander on the Dayton Peace Accords and assisted with the planning and oversight of the November 11, 2000 election, which was the third general election in Bosnia after the civil war. Scott's experience in Bosnia taught him that citizens will only respect the outcome of an election if the process is transparent, fair, and accurate.

To Scott, ensuring every citizen’s right to vote is more than a mere campaign slogan. As Secretary of State, guaranteeing that every vote is counted will be Scott's top priority.

After returning home to Savannah, Scott married the former Kathleen Oh of Reidsville, Georgia. Shortly thereafter, Scott was assigned to 3rd U.S. Army/Army Forces Central Command at Fort McPherson, GA. In July 2001, Scott and Kathleen moved to Decatur, Georgia, and looked forward to their first year as newlyweds.

On September 12, 2001, one day after the terror attacks, Scott was appointed the legal advisor to the Army’s planning team that prepared the military response to the Global War on Terror. In November, he deployed to Kuwait with the Coalition Forces Land Component Command (CFLCC) and worked on high-profile issues for Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan.

While deployed, Scott was selected to serve on the top-secret planning team that drafted the Army’s contingency plan for the war in Iraq. He provided legal advice on the law of war, and played a prominent role in the development of rules of engagement, targeting decisions, and international agreements.

Scott then served during Operation Iraqi Freedom, advising commanders on the law of war and reviewing operational level targets for compliance with international law. Following the capture of Baghdad, he returned home to Kathleen, ending their long separation.

Scott has published articles about his experiences in the Chicago Journal of International Law, Field Artillery Journal (March-June 2004), and the Military Law and Law of War Review. In addition, he contributed to the Army's Legal Lessons Learned From Afghanistan and Iraq, Volume I.

Scott is very proud of his service, and he wholeheartedly supports America's troops and prays for their safe and swift return.

Professional

In 2004, Scott transitioned to private practice as an attorney with Sutherland Asbill & Brennan LLP, one of Atlanta's largest and most respected law firms. He focuses his legal practice on securities and business matters, regularly advising companies on regulatory and compliance issues. He has handled cases before the Securities Division of the Georgia Secretary of State's Office, the NASD, and the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.

As Secretary of State, Scott will use his securities experience in his role as Commissioner of Securities. He will improve customer service to businesses and investment professionals while protecting Georgians from fraud.

Community Involvement

Scott has always been committed to service and he has worked on numerous service projects over the years. During law school, Scott volunteered as a Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) for children, held a Public Interest Advocates Fellowship, and received the Pro Bono Publico Award for Outstanding Public Service.

Today, Scott volunteers at the Veterans Affairs Hospital in Decatur, Georgia and also represents veterans on a pro bono basis through his law firm.

American Marshall Memorial Fellow

In 2005, Scott was selected to represent Georgia as an American Marshall Memorial Fellow. He traveled to five European countries and met with national and local leaders to discuss elections, securities reform, business growth, and other important policy matters.

As Secretary of State, Scott will use his fellowship experience and network of contacts to promote economic growth in Georgia.

Athlete

Scott loves sports and he is an avid runner. He has completed eight marathons (five Marine Corps Marathons, the Country Music Marathon in Nashville, the Disney Marathon, and the London Marathon). Scott ran all five Marine Corps Marathons and the Country Music Marathon with his father. He has also completed the Atlanta and Tybee Island Half-Marathons.

Scott has finished every race that he has started, and he will use that same determination in his bid to be Georgia's next Secretary of State.

Family

Scott and Kathleen reside in northeast Atlanta with their puppy, Bosco. They are members of Immaculate Heart of Mary Church.
