InfoRepresenting one of the most popular tourist destinations in the country, Mark , first elected to Congress in 1994, is now serving his fourth term as the U.S. Representative from Florida's 16th congressional district.

Throughout his tenure in Congress, Mark has been recognized by several national groups and organizations for fighting to control federal spending, promote fiscal responsibility and provide real tax relief to hard-working Americans.

The National Taxpayers Union, U.S. Chamber of Commerce and National Federation of Businesses are just a few of the many organizations that have praised Mark's efforts in promoting legislation to stimulate economic growth.

At the beginning of the 106th Congress, Mark was appointed to the powerful House Ways and Means Committee. He plays an important role in reforming the tax code, providing tax relief, expanding trade, seeking solutions to save Social Security, shoring up Medicare, reforming welfare and addressing children's safety issues.

In addition to his committee assignment, Mark serves in the House leadership as a Deputy Majority Whip. He is also Chairman of the Entertainment Industry Task Force, Co-Chairman of the Missing and Exploited Children?s Caucus and Co-Chairman of the Travel and Tourism Caucus and Co-Chairman of the Congressional Art Competition.

During his first two terms in Congress, Mark chalked up a series of legislative accomplishments. He secured the first-ever federal funding, of over $200 million, to begin the preservation of Florida's Everglades and passed legislation that expedites the deportation of non-violent criminal aliens serving their sentences in federal prisons. He also succeeded in passing a law allowing volunteer youth-serving organizations to have access to F.B.I. fingerprint background checks to protect children and he eliminated federal prohibitions on notifying a campus community when a student commits a violent crime. He successfully sought a solution for surviving heirs of Holocaust victims who have been unable to collect on life insurance policies.

Even more, Mark has helped over 1,500 individuals with Social Security concerns, veterans? benefits, immigration and more; secured over $35 million in funding for important local projects; joined with Sentator Chuck Hagel to propose a prescription drug discount plan for seniors; and authored legislation to protect businesses from frivolous lawsuits or ?drive-by lawsuits? based on disability laws.

Prior to his public service, Mark started a small family restaurant in Lake Worth when he was 20 years old. He later started a catering business and began an independent real estate business. At 23, he was appointed to the Lake Worth City Commission and served as Vice Mayor from 1983-84. In 1990, Mark was elected to the Florida House of Representatives and, in 1992, to the State Senate.

An active and involved member of his community, Mark has served as President of the Central County Council of Realtors, Chairman of Gulfstream Goodwill Industries, Board Member of Just Say No International and Chairman of the Palm Beach Regional Hospital's Board of Directors.

He has been recognized for his service to the community with awards, including the Florida Farm Bureau's "Legislator of the Year Award? and the Florida Medical Association's "Distinguished Layman Award." Always a friend of the taxpayer and small business, He also has received awards every year of his congressional service from the U.S. Chamber of Commerce as well as the National Taxpayers Union.

The son of Edward and Fran Foley, Mark was born September 8, 1954, in Needham, Massachusetts. He moved to Florida at the age of three and has lived in the West Palm Beach area ever since. Southern Florida's 16th congressional district includes residents of Glades, Hendry, Highlands, Martin, Okeechobee, Palm Beach and St. Lucie Counties.
