The Navy brought Tim’s family to Goose Creek when he was in the 2nd grade, and he has lived in and around Charleston ever since. His father is a retired Chief Petty Officer. His mother is a Navy veteran, a former firefighter, and a former police officer. His step-father, both step-brothers, and many uncles are veterans. His grandfather is a retired dairy and corn farmer.

Tim Larkin comes from a working family; taught through word and deed to earn his own way.
Military/Work Experience

In 1997 Tim enlisted in the Army National Guard and shipped to Fort Jackson, SC for Basic Training. He has served honorably for over 15 years. In 2004 he deployed to Afghanistan with the United States Army in support of Operation Enduring Freedom. During this tour of duty he served primarily in Kabul as the Non-Commissioned Officer in Charge of the Commander’s Advisory Group. In this capacity Tim provided non-traditional insight and analysis to the Commanding General of US Forces Afghanistan. For their actions, his unit was presented the Joint Meritorious Service Unit Award by the Secretary of Defense, Donald Rumsfeld. After a brief stint in civilian clothes, Tim deployed again. His second deployment was to Kosovo where he served as the Chief of Communications for an infantry battalion. He continues to serve today in the South Carolina Army National Guard as both an Instructor and a founding member of the South Carolina National Guard Computer Network Defense Team.

Tim has received numerous military decorations, including: the 218th Regiment’s Outstanding Leadership Award and Academic Honor Graduate award; Armed Forces Reserve Medal (2nd Award); Overseas Service Ribbon (2nd Award); Kosovo Campaign Medal; Global War on Terrorism Medal; Afghanistan Campaign Medal; National Defense Service Medal; Army Reserve Components Achievement Medal (2nd Award); Army Good Conduct Medal; Army Achievement Medal (2nd Award); Army Commendation Medal (2nd Award); Joint Service Commendation Medal (2nd Award); the Meritorious Service Medal; and his most recent score at the Army’s firing range qualified him as a Sharpshooter.

In March of 2011, he was named the Soldier of the Month for the 218th Maneuver Enhanced Brigade in Charleston, SC. Shortly thereafter he was named the Army National Guard Soldier of the Year by the Exchange Club of Charleston.

In his civilian life, Tim is a Project Manager and Senior Systems Analyst at a Department of Defense contractor in North Charleston, where he leads and mentors an elite team of Cyber-Security professionals in support of US Government programs. He is a Certified Information Systems Security Professional and is one of fewer than 800 people in the United States to pass the examination for the Information Systems Security Engineering Professional (or “ISSEP”) certification that was designed with heavy input from the National Security Agency.
Education

As a young man in Goose Creek, SC, Tim attended Stratford High School. He was then accepted to and attended Camden Military Academy in Camden, SC for his junior and senior years, graduating 3rd in his class. Tim went on to complete his Bachelor in Business Administration degree by continuing his studies while overseas with the Army and completing his coursework upon his return. He is an Army Tuition Assistance and GI Bill educated citizen, and is still chipping away at two small student loans. Tim will finish his Master of Business Administration in July of 2013, and has been conditionally accepted to begin his PhD in Information Technology with a Specialization in Information Assurance and Security in mid-2013.
