InfoMike Callaghan was born in Richwood, West Virginia on March 31, 1963. Growing up in a small town among the foothills of the Appalachian Mountains instilled in Mike a deep and abiding respect for family, faith, community, and hard work.

Mike graduated from Richwood High School in 1981 before obtaining a Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering from the University of Virginia. He attended law school at West Virginia University, where he served as editor-in-chief of the West Virginia Law Review. He is a published advocate of West Virginians’ Second Amendment right to keep and bear arms. A lifelong hunter and lifetime member of the National Rifle Association, Mike staunchly believes in the people’s right to keep and bear arms.

For nine years, Mike served as an Assistant U.S. Attorney in the southern district of West Virginia, serving from 1997 until 2001 as head of the criminal division. Mike worked vigorously to fight drug trafficking and white collar crime throughout West Virginia. In 2001, Mike was appointed to the post of Secretary of the Department of Environmental Protection by former Governor Bob Wise. There, Mike worked hard to find a fair balance between our state’s industries and the need to protect the beautiful mountains, streams, and forests for all West Virginians.

Most recently, Mike served as Chairman of the West Virginia Democratic Party, where he was a fierce advocate for traditional democratic values such as a protecting social security and improving our education system. As Chairman, Mike modernized the way the West Virginia Democratic Party did business, retooling the Party’s website and focusing on increasing youth involvement in politics. Under his Chairmanship, the number of Young Democrats chapters across the state tripled. For all of his hard work for the Democratic Party in West Virginia, Mike was honored at the 2004 Jefferson-Jackson Dinner with the Franklin D. Roosevelt award, naming him the West Virginia Democrat of the Year.

Community involvement is extremely important to Mike. He is a member of the Charleston Rotary Club, where he serves as Vice Chairman of the Programs Committee, and he is a parent volunteer with Pack 76 of the Boy Scouts of America.

Mike has been married for 16 years to Dana Callaghan and they have three children. Mike attends First Presbyterian Church in Charleston, West Virginia.
