InfoIn 1998, the South Carolina Chamber of Commerce named Bob Staton “Business Leader of the Year” for “one word: vision.” Now Bob wants to use his vision to help every child by leading South Carolina’s education system as our next Superintendent of Education.
As one of South Carolina’s leading businessmen and strongest allies of education, Bob Staton has the experience to lead our children to success. He knows that South Carolina’s education system must be run like a business – expecting results and demanding accountability.

Growing up, Bob worked in the summers in the mills of Springs Industries in Lancaster while attending Presbyterian College, earning a bachelor’s degree in economics. He graduated from the University of South Carolina Law School and began practicing law in Columbia.
Bob joined Colonial Life & Accident Insurance Company in 1985 as General Counsel, becoming President, Chairman and CEO in 1994. Most recently Bob has served as the President of the United
Way Association of South Carolina and Chairman of the Board of Carolina National Bank.

Bob was recognized as Ambassador of the Year by the Greater Columbia Chamber of Commerce in 2000 and received the Humanitarian of the Year Award from the United Way of the Midlands. In 2005, Bob was awarded the Order of the Silver Crescent from the Governor's Office for his service and leadership to South Carolina’s education system. As a community leader Bob has used his various positions to defend our values. He was one of South Carolina’s leading
fundraisers in the effort to defeat video poker.

In 1997, Governor Beasley appointed Bob to the PASS commission, which developed the recommendations for the Education Accountability Act of 1998, creating the
Education Oversight Committee (EOC). The EOC bears responsibilities for the development and improvement of South Carolina’s educational accountability system and for making recommendations to ensure the continuous improvement of schools. Bob has served as a business appointee of the EOC since its inception
and for the last four years has served as its Chairman.

Being a member of the EOC has given Bob the chance to become intimately involved with South Carolina’s education system. He has visited schools and communities across the state, interacting with students, parents, teachers, administrators, and school boards. Wanting to help individual students on a one-on-one basis, Bob became a mentor in Richland School District 1. His experiences on the Oversight Committee and as a mentor have led him to embark on this journey to become South Carolina’s next Superintendent of Education.

Bob is an elder at Saxe Gotha Presbyterian Church in Lexington. He and his wife Mary live in Lexington. They have four children and four grandchildren.
