| Info | Marc Alessi was elected to the 1st Assembly District representing Brookhaven, Riverhead, Southold and Shelter Island in a special election on September 13, 2005. Marc was elected to public office after years of working within the labor movement as political coordinator for CSEA on Long Island, and as the Long Island Director of the State Comptroller’s Office. He is a member of the following Committees in the State Assembly: Labor; Energy; Transportation; Agriculture; Local Governments; and Aging. Marc is the Chair of the Sub Committee on the Emerging Workforce.
As a member of the Committee on Agriculture Marc has fought to help his farmers and wineries survive on the East End of Long Island by authoring and passing legislation that allows wineries to hold two liquor permits at the same location so that they could keep their tasting room open while holding a tented event outside. He also passed legislation to extend the North Fork Wine Trail, and has recently introduced legislation to remove small farm wineries from the burdensome wholesale reporting requirement that tax and finance is trying to include them in.
As the Chair of the Sub Committee on the Emerging Workforce, Marc has concentrated on the area of tech transfer, by fighting for tax credits that would provide an incentive for investors to invest in the new technologies that come out of our region’s premier research institutions like Brookhaven National Lab and SUNY Stony Brook. By providing these incentives Marc believes we can create the good paying innovation jobs that our region deserves. Marc has also fought to ensure that these research institutions that provide such a positive impact on our local economy continue to thrive by securing $26 Million for SUNY Stony Brook to house one of the fastest supercomputers in the world at BNL. He also worked with the New York Power Authority to ensure that both BNL and other private businesses on Long Island receive the low cost power they need to survive in today’s competitive market.
As a member of the Committee on Energy Marc has fought LIPA to hold them accountable in an attempt to bring energy rates down for all Long Islanders. He has led the charge to help ensure that bio-diesel plays an important role in New York’s Energy Future. He sponsored and passed legislation to allow for businesses to get energy credits from their utility when they invest in wind and solar power. Finally Marc has recently introduced legislation that will include small companies that are bringing to market new alternative energy products with the tax incentives currently enjoyed by other industries of innovation.
Since Law School where he won awards in his study of Health Care Law, Marc has been passionate about real health care reform that would ensure that the relationship between doctors and their patients are not tainted by Insurance Companies. Marc has recently passed a law that would prevent Insurance companies from arbitrarily raising their rates, and has recently introduced legislation to ensure that doctors and providers are reimbursed at reasonable levels.
Marc has begun the process of working with builders, environmentalists, and local planners to draft legislation that would provide a more regional approach to Long Island’s Economic Development and Environmental Planning. He believes working together, as one Island/ one voice, we will meet our Regions needs better.
Marc is a dedicated father and community leader who makes his home in Shoreham with his wife, Gretchen, their daughter, Sarah Ruby, and their son, Samuel.
