InfoAnder Crenshaw

Congressman Ander Crenshaw serves Florida's Fourth Congressional District as their representative to the United States House of Representatives. Elected to Congress on November 7, 2000, Crenshaw has taken steps to make Northeast Florida neighborhoods safer, strengthen our military, improve education, provide tax relief and win federal funding for Northeast Florida area projects.

In Congress, Crenshaw serves on the Armed Services, Budget and Veterans' Affairs Committees in the House. As a member of the Armed Services Committee, Crenshaw serves on the Subcommittee on Military Installations and Facilities and the Subcommittee on Military Research and Development. Also, as a member of the Veterans' Affairs Committee, Crenshaw serves as a member of the Subcommittee on Health and Subcommittee on Benefits.

Appointed an Assistant Majority Whip, Crenshaw helps mobilize Members of Congress for key legislative votes by building voting coalitions and ensuring that legislation is crafted to guarantee broad support for passage. Additionally, Crenshaw was elected by his fellow Congressional Republican freshmen to serve as their representative to the House GOP leadership. In this capacity, Crenshaw is involved in mapping GOP strategies, coordinating communications and GOP message development, and relaying input and advice from the freshman class to the leadership as congressional priorities are developed and considered. Crenshaw is also a member or the Republican policy committee, which develops and promotes the issues to be considered by the House.

A third generation resident of Northeast Florida, Crenshaw was born on September 1, 1944 in Jacksonville, Florida. The son of an attorney and grandson of a cracker factory owner, Crenshaw attended Robert E. Lee High School in Jacksonville, where he was a standout basketball player. Crenshaw attended the University of Georgia on a basketball scholarship and later received his law degree from the University of Florida.

Prior to his current elected office, Crenshaw served in the Florida House of Representatives and the Florida Senate. Elected to the Florida House of Representatives in 1972, Crenshaw served three terms there before returning to the private sector to concentrate on raising his family and building a successful investment-banking business. As an investment banker, Crenshaw worked for over twenty years for several Wall Street firms, specializing in financing for healthcare facilities.

Crenshaw reentered public service in 1986 when he was elected to the Florida Senate in a special election. During his tenure in the State Senate, Crenshaw became the first Republican in Florida's history to be elected President of the Senate in 1992. As Senate President, Crenshaw presided over an evenly split body, where he was known as a skilled consensus builder and a leader - two qualities that serve him well with the 107th Congress closely divided between Democrats and Republicans.

Additionally, Crenshaw has served on numerous civic and community boards. Crenshaw lives in Jacksonville with his wife of thirty-one years, Kitty, and their two daughters. They are members of Grace Episcopal Church.
