|Info||Bernie DeCastro was born in Hartford Connecticut on October 17th, 1944 and moved to Miami, Florida with his mother when he was four years old. Bernie’s father side of the family came from South America and his mother was from Haiti. Bernie attended Riverside elementary, Ada Merrit Junior High and Miami Sr. High. Bernie began to get in trouble with the law when he was fourteen and by the time he was 18, he was sentenced to two years in prison for Breaking and entering. Bernie ended up going back to prison 3 more times for drug related crimes including a life + 30 year sentence that he received in 1976 for a series of drug related robberies in Dade County, Florida. Thank God no one was hurt during any of these crimes. All together Bernie ended up spending over 18 years in Florida's criminal justice system. |
The criminal justice system is a melting pot of cultures and personalities where in order to survive you learn how to get along with some of society's most dangerous personalities. Bernie DeCastro quickly adapted to this rigorous environment where only the strong survive. Bernie learned how to live with people from diverse cultures and he learned that being a man in prison meant being a man of your word, minding your own business and standing up for yourself when the situation called for it.
On August 9th, 1981, while serving this life sentence Bernie DeCastro had a profound life-changing spiritual awakening. Three years later on November 20th, 1984, Bernie was paroled to Ocala, Florida. Ten years later in 1994, Governor Lawton Chiles looked at Bernie's accomplishments since being paroled and determined him to be worthy of a full pardon.
In 1986, Bernie married Lauren Askren and together they have five beautiful children. David is 16, Noelle 13, Michael 12, Hannah 8, and Olivia 6. Regrettably Bernie and Lauren were divorced in 2003 but they both work together to make sure that their five children receive the love, nurturing, guidance and discipline that they need to grow up to be healthy responsible adults.
Bernie DeCastro's spiritual conversion has been so remarkable that it has gained him favor all over the State of Florida. He has spoken in numerous churches, civic clubs, statewide and national conferences as well as appearing on numerous radio and television programs. It has been said of Bernie DeCastro he is a genuine human being and it doesn't matter if he is talking to a young child or a VIP, he is the same man who genuinely cares for everyone he meets.
Bernie DeCastro's ethnic heritage and his life experience make him uniquely qualified to represent all of Florida's citizens. Whether rich, or poor, young or old, white, black or Hispanic, Christian, Jew or Muslim, Republican, Democrat or Independent, Bernie DeCastro can relate to every man and woman in Florida.
