InfoJohn P. Sullivan was born and lives in Illinois’ 3rd Congressional District. As an Assistant Cook County State’s Attorney, John serves with the Gang Crimes Unit of the Special Prosecutions Bureau. With the Gang Crimes Unit John prosecutes some of the most brutal and senseless murders in the south suburbs and Chicago. The South Suburban Association of Chiefs of Police recently presented John with the Chief’s Certificate of Appreciation for his work that helped lead to the arrest and prosecution of a triple homicide that occurred in Robbins and Chicago. Since joining the State’s Attorney’s Office in 1998, John has served in the Felony Trial, Misdemeanor and Traffic divisions.

Prior to joining the Cook County State’s Attorney’s Office, John worked with some of Illinois most respected public servants. Most recently, he served as Press Secretary for former U.S. Attorney Jim Burns’ gubernatorial campaign. Prior to joining Burns, John worked as a staff member for U.S. Senator Richard J. Durbin in his Senate office and on his 1996 U.S. Senate Campaign.

John’s service to the community extends beyond his role as a local prosecutor. John was recently elected to the Local School Council for Clissold Elementary School in Chicago where he works to improve educational standards and helps set the school’s budget. He also tutored elementary school children in reading, writing and math for the Cabrini Green Tutoring Program.

John’s commitment to public service was instilled by his parents, John and Barbara Sullivan. As the son of two teachers, John learned at an early age the importance of a quality education. His father served as a professor at Moraine Valley Community College in Palos Heights and was a member of the American Federation of Teachers. His mother worked as an elementary school teacher at St. Damian School in Oak Forest.

John also appreciates how difficult it is for a middle class family to pay for a quality education. Throughout college and law school, John worked selling electronics equipment, painting houses, cutting grass, selling the New York Times, washing dishes and changing oil to help pay his tuition. John also relied on the Federal Government’s Student Loan Program to pay for his education.

John was born on November 26, 1971, in Oak Lawn, Illinois. While growing up in the South and Southwest Suburbs, he attended St. Damian Grade School and Marian Catholic High School. John received his B.A. from Marquette University and his law degree from DePaul University.

John is married to Nicole Sullivan, a registered nurse who works in the pediatric intensive care unit at the University of Chicago Comer Children’s Hospital. Nicole is a member of the Illinois Nurses Association. John and Nicole have one daughter, Catherine Sullivan.
