InfoDenise O’Brien has been a family farmer in Atlantic, Iowa with her husband Larry Harris since 1976. They have 3 adult children. For over 30 years, Denise has devoted her professional life to educating and advocating on issues that concern family farms.

Currently, O’Brien is the Executive Director of a nonprofit she founded in 1994 that works with women and widowed land owners and beginning farmers. 47% of Iowa farmland is owned by women. She currently serves on and is past president of the Iowa Association of County Conservation Boards. She has served as an appointed member of the Iowa Governor's Farm Crisis Policy Task Force and served as President of the National Family Farm Coalition from 1993-1995.

She has participated in delegations and conferences in China, Central America, the Soviet Union, Mexico and Europe. In 1997, she addressed the United Nations on behalf of farmers and in 2005 was a delegate to the United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization’s Committee on Agriculture.

O’Brien says, “I have the personal experience and professional knowledge of agriculture at the local, national and international level. I have spent the last two months traveling around the state to hear what Iowans are looking for in a Secretary of Agriculture. It is crucial that farmers have the information and resources to make decisions which are economically viable and environmentally sound. I have assembled an exploratory committee to uncover ways to advocate for farmers as the Iowa Secretary of Agriculture.”

"Denise O'Brien has the skills and understanding to move Iowa towards an agriculture that fosters not only economic prosperity, but also social well-being and environmental health. Denise merits our support." Charles Carpenter, farmer, Coon Rapids.
