Info | Joel Zinberg, M.D., J.D. is a life long New Yorker. He graduated Stuyvesant High School and went on to receive a B.A. in economics with High Honors, Phi Beta Kappa, from Swarthmore College. He received his medical degree from the Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons and completed a surgical residency at the Mount Sinai Hospital on the Upper East Side where he has practiced for twenty five years.
Dr. Zinberg also earned a law degree from the Yale Law School where he was a senior editor on the Law Journal. Combining his expertise in both law and medicine, Dr. Zinberg sits on numerous committees, has published many articles and has delivered numerous lectures on health policy, medical-legal issues, and ethics. He has taught at the Columbia Law School and at the Mount Sinai and Columbia Medical Schools.
Joel lives on the Upper East Side with his wife, Colleen, a fellow physician, and their wonderful daughter, Sophie. They are active in their synagogue and many other community groups including the Nineteenth Police Precinct Community Council.
Joel is not a career politician. He is a surgeon in private practice who, on a daily basis, helps people with serious, often life threatening illnesses. He knows what it is like to run a small business in the city and the challenges of effective education.
The current City Council is largely composed of persons whose only life experience is as a politician or an aide to one. Dr. Zinberg believes effective public servants need to have spent time in the private sector.
Having lived in New York City his entire life, Dr. Zinberg has seen how dramatically the reform agendas of Mayors Giuliani and Bloomberg have improved the city. He also has seen the current City Council stand in the way of Mayor Bloomberg's reforms. Dr. Zinberg will be a voice for reform in the City Council. Rather than reflexively oppose him at every turn, Dr. Zinberg will partner with Mayor Bloomberg to continue the progress in keeping the city safe, improving the schools, improving healthcare delivery and helping the city bounce back from economic adversity.
Dr. Zinberg will make certain that the Upper East Side remains a place where he will want to raise and educate his child, and where all Upper East Siders will be comfortable raising their families
