InfoI am the eldest of 12 children. We all helped build the family business, and started at an early age. In 1960, my dad started Dot Foods. When I was 10 years old, I started working in the warehouse. All of the brothers worked in the warehouse or garage, while my sisters helped in the office. Thanks to my dad’s example, we all learned a strong work ethic at an early age.

Today, I’m proud to say that all 12 of us are still involved in our family business. I serve as the general outside counsel for Dot Foods, and have done so since 1976, for 33 years. Under the leadership of my family, Dot Foods now employs around 3,500 employees, most of them in Illinois. My family certainly knows something about how to create jobs in Illinois.

I also know about perseverance. In the 1980s, I owned and operated my own law firm for 8 years. At its peak, my firm had 5 attorneys and 5 staff members. And despite a prolonged illness, which brought about some tough times, I still made payroll. I know from experience how challenging it can be to run a business, and I’ve learned how to overcome those challenges.

Today, I am a partner at Brown, Hay & Stephens, LLP, the largest law firm in Springfield, and the oldest law firm in Illinois. In fact, Abe Lincoln once worked for this very same firm. For over 30 years, I have been practicing law, primarily representing family businesses.

If elected, I will use my three decades of courtroom and board room experience to make Illinois more job friendly by making changes to the business environment, such as reduction of work comp abuse and eliminating wasteful government spending, inefficiencies and duplication.

My wife, Wanda, and I live in Springfield, and are the parents of 4 adult children, Steven, Liz, Jaclyn, and Tori. We are members of Blessed Sacrament Church in Springfield, where I have served as lector, counter and fund-raiser.

I am not a career politician, but I am a concerned citizen that feels a strong responsibility to step forward and challenge the status quo. While others may have led a more public life, I have succeeded in all the areas that matter most, with my family, my business, and my community. The same values and principles that have served me well in family, business, and law will serve me will as Lieutenant Governor of Illinois.
