DescriptionBBC Profile:
The seat of Lewisham East has been Labour since its formation in 1974, apart from the period between 1983 and 1992. Labour's Bridget Prentice has been the MP since 1992.

At the election, boundary changes see the seat gain part-wards from Lewisham West and Lewisham Deptford, and lose one part-ward to Lewisham Deptford.

To find out what might have happened had this boundary change been in force at the last election, see a notional - or estimated - result below.

Lewisham East is a mix of suburban streets, south-east London estates and leafy Blackheath. The area is mainly residential, and includes the green expanse of Blackheath itself, surrounded by terraces and large detached houses.

A mix of young professionals and families is supplemented by a large older population. In fact, pensioner households make up just over 20% of the population.

There is no tube, but regular rail services into central London and the Docklands Light Railway connect the area to Docklands and the City.

The borough was one of the first to introduce the government's new street warden initiative, designed to combat anti-social behaviour.

Recently, the government's Single Regeneration Budget has granted 16m to Lewisham Council for urban regeneration, and Blackheath Village has been given a facelift to make the most of its potential as a shopping centre.
