InfoMichelle Schimel is now serving her second term in the New York State Assembly for the 16th Assembly District. She was first elected in a Special Election held on March 27, 2007. Prior to her election to the New York State Assembly, Michelle Schimel was recognized among her peers as a leader and reformer, having spent eight years as North Hempstead Town Clerk working tirelessly to make government more efficient and transparent.

Now a full time legislator, Michelle has been recognized in Albany and in her community for her passion on the issues that affect New York, particularly the prevention of gun violence and protecting the environment.

A lifelong community activist, Michelle serves on the board of New Yorkers Against Gun Violence (NYAGV), the largest citizens' group in New York State dedicated to reducing gun-related violence. In 1995, as Vice President and member of the Executive Board of NYAGV, Michelle and Congresswoman Carolyn McCarthy co-founded the Long Island Chapter.

To date Michelle’s proudest accomplishment in the legislature is introducing her landmark Microstamping Legislation. Her bill passed in the Assembly in April 2008, but has been blocked in the Senate due to strong arming by the Gun Lobby. Michelle’s bill would make all semi-automatic handguns microstamp capable by 2010. When fired, all shell cartridges would have a microstamped engraved code for the make, model and serial number of the firearm. Law enforcement would be able to trace the cartridge back to the original buyer of the firearm creating whole new system of crime leads. Over 50 law enforcement agencies and police departments around the state have endorsed Assemblywoman Schimel’s microstamping legislation.

Assemblywoman Schimel has been designated as a leader on environmental legislation having been given special recognition by Environmental Advocates of New York for her strong environmental voting record. Her recent work has been focused on protecting and preserving open space, and she is a strong proponent of preserving Long Island’s water resources, most notably the Lloyd Aquifer. To that end, she is co-sponsor of legislation that requires proper disposal of pharmaceutical products.

During her tenure as Town Clerk, Michelle spearheaded a program for electronic waste recycling in the Town of North Hempstead. Michelle hopes to expand this program into a statewide electronic waste recycling program. As a hybrid electric car owner, Michelle authored a resolution for the Town to transition their municipal fleet to hybrid electric and other alternative energy vehicles.

Assemblywoman Schimel is a member of the Assembly Energy Committee. She is a co-sponsor on the Expansion of State Net Metering Laws: Net metering is the practice that credits consumers for the clean energy they generate themselves.

Michelle has been a leader in protecting identity and national security interests through the protection of vital records. Recognized for her strong management and advocacy skills, she was appointed by the State Education Department and continues to serve on the Local Government Records Advisory Council that sets guidelines for the security and accessibility of local government records. In 2006, Michelle was selected to serve on the New York State "Cyber-Security Panel" in conjunction with Homeland Security to review Internet policies for local governments throughout the state.

Michelle Schimel was born in Brooklyn and has been a resident of Great Neck with her husband Mark since 1982. She has two sons, Alex and Spencer. Before being elected to public office, Michelle was a physical therapist and certified wound care specialist at North Shore University Hospital. From 1982-1994 Michelle was vice president of a fashion accessories firm in Manhattan. She is an alumna of the University of Pennsylvania.
