Imperator: 99.9% of abortions are not medical decisions.

Twenty years ago, I had a friend who was involved in the Right to Life movement. At that time, he had some statistics that 6% of abortions fell into the "exceptions" such as rape, incest, and health of the mother. I don't know if the stats have changed since then. As far as being "medical decisions," I would think that only the health of the mother would qualify out of this 6%.

This is something that I have wondered about, too. Concubines were common throughout the biblical period, in addition to polygamy. Paul wrote that a bishop must be the husband of one wife, which indicates that the congregations still had polygamists at that time (otherwise why say it?).

Has anyone seen the History Channel's series on the presidents? I recently watched episodes covering the years 1820 to 1860. I am shocked by the number of errors and unnecessary oversimplifications. The errors don't even contribute to a more interesting story - it is just sloppiness.

The narrator said that the states decided to start counting the popular vote in 1824 and this was used to show Jackson's popularity even though he didn't win a majority. As everyone here knows, this is totally false information. States where the Presidential Electors were elected by the people counted and reported the popular vote before this. The earlier popular vote numbers have been researched by Dubin and Lampi and others (I happen to have done it for North Carolina). The first time that the popular vote in various states was tallied nationwide was in -1827- (not 1824 as the series reported).

The series said that Van Buren did nothing to remedy the financial crisis - and then assigned Van Buren's solution to Polk later in the series.

Perhaps the most egregious is the critique that Tyler "refused to appoint a new vice president."

One last complaint by me: the narrator said that Pierce was nominated and elected because he was loved by everyone. That is total nonsense. Polk was a "dark horse" in the sense that he was a nationally known politician (former Speaker of the US House and Governor of Tennessee). Pierce was a mostly unknown person who had been out of the US Senate for a decade; although he had served honorably in the Mexican War, he was not anything like Scott, Taylor, or Fremont. In no sense could he be considered to have been loved by everyone. Like Polk, he was a compromise choice when the convention deadlocked. Again, the true story is more interesting than the series' error.

Andy: Nixon visiting China was about as big of a blunder as invading Iraq.

Can you elaborate?

Happy birthday to one of OC's more entertaining and frustration members. He would often start a sentence in a post and end it something nonlinear thinking, not to mention US constitutionalism. His Magyar ancestry from medieval Hungary though.

Here is one my favorite Buday quotes:

Guilliani is a leg iron and may only win Neveda which turned Vegas into what he turned Time Square from and to. Oh Guilliani is not pro choice as some NY Strippers.

[Buday is familiar with New York strippers?!]

Charles II was an acquaintance of William Penn. I read in one biography that they attended the same school together in Europe, but other biographies dispute that claim.

Charles II had an unusual set of interactions with Quakers. The ship that carried him back to England at the time of the Restoration was owned and piloted by a Quaker. The leader of the Parliamentary forces guarding London quit as Charles approached, and a local Quaker was appointed to lead this small army (!). The Quaker leader never gave the order to fire on the approaching royal party, allowing them to occupy London peacefully.

One day when William Penn needed to speak with Charles II, the King mentioned to him that only one person wore a hat in the room where they were. Penn acknowledged the King's words but did not remove his hat. Thereupon, the King removed his crown.

I have been going through the user table and deleting users who fit the following criteria:

1) The user never posted a single time.

2) No one ever posted on the user's page.

3) The user made no site contributions (news, races, candidates, etc.).

In one case, a former user never posted and never contributed anything, but one other user posted on his user page - and I left him in the table.

Thus far, I have gone through the first 100 users. There were 47 users out of this 100 who were deleted. I am keeping a table on my home computer that lists everyone who has been removed from the user table in case of an error.

Hi everyone - I am working on the various issues that have been raised. Right now I am stuck on a technical issue that I need to get fixed first, and then I will continue with the items that have been mentioned here.

I continue to be amazed to see how many people do not see the horrors of sexual assault. There were two recent cases in my area. Some people I know have known one of the men who is now in jail for this, and they believe that others are too harsh on him. He has psychologically sabotaged the lives of three people, which will undermine their future relationships. This is serious stuff - I wish that the allowable punishment could be increased.

I wish they would have provided a D-R-I breakdown of the survey findings.
