Speed limits are a burden on personal liberty and stifle economic activity. Frankly, it's refreshing to see a conservative politician not act like a grandmother on this issue.
Road safety has more to do with awareness of one's surroundings than it does about speed.

NSF funding rates are in the single digits
No. This particular study is getting more than three quarters of a million dollars.
proposals go through intensive peer review to decide if they're worth the money.
Scientists who live off grants get to decide what scientists get to live off grants. With that kind of oversight, what abuse could possible happen?
Most of human medicine and countless other applications of science and technology would never have arisen without basic research that had no immediate prospects for any application.
Yeah yeah, if not for the Moon missions, we wouldn't have the microwave. I bet if they had been trying to invent a microwave directly though, they would have done it a lot cheaper and a lot faster than doing so by way of the Moon.

I'm not against using taxpayer money to fund scientific research. That research should, however, be towards something with a tangible benefit for society. Studies on snail reproduction might make for a mildly interesting footnote in some textbook, but given the scope of what's going on with the budget (and even still with unemployment), we no longer have the luxury to fund mere curiosities.
Sure, a lot of researchers' pet projects will go nowhere without outside funds, and that sucks for them. To compensate, they should do what everybody else does: form a non-profit and hustle some eccentric billionaire with a sympathetic ear for these kinds of things. In the meantime, scientists aren't entitled. Frankly it's apologetic responses to articles like these that do the scientific community a disservice by lending substance to various right-wing arguments about how corrupt and self-serving scientists can be.

Homegrown Democrat: This is not a "snail sex study" ... it is a study into the advantages and disadvantages of sexual reproduction and they are using an organism that undergoes both sexual and asexual reproduction as their model. They can compare genetic variability between both types of reproduction within a single species rather than comparing two different organisms. This could lead us to a better understanding as to why sexual reproduction is so favored among higher organisms, as well as a more accurate quantification of how much sexual reproduction enhances genetic variability. These are fundamental biology questions and they are certainly worth investigating.
More importantly... hot sexy snail porn.
Still a waste of money.

It's amazing. Almost all of the bad things the opposition said would happen with Obamacare passage has happened.
Rising premiums, rising costs, hours being cut, people losing their coverage. Hell, even the cost of taking care of your pets is going to rise due to the medical equipment taxes.

Voter ID is intended to prevent election day fraud. Absentee fraud would need to be dealt in other ways. That is not a strike against voter ID.
Liberals are dense on this issue.
