A Democrat that everyone (at least here) hates vs. a kooky Republican, but the Dem's still ahead in the polls. Why can't we have that here in Jersey?

00: NJ Dem reaction to this has been silly. Yeah, Christie did it for self-serving purposes but so what?
It's hypocritical of him to veto an early voting bill based on the costs but then spend money on a special election when it can be held three weeks later (or any other program that costs money and benefits people greatly like health funding or the NYC tunnel). Is it something that the Dems ought to sue over? No, but it's another mark on his record of not sharing the burden when he wants to cut the budget.
Of course, this will mean squat to the November voters who will vote for him solely because he didn't go to Disney World for the last storm.

Regarding the statutes on special elections, straight from the state website:
19:3-26. If a vacancy shall happen in the representation of this State in the United States senate, it shall be filled at the general election next succeeding the happening thereof, unless such vacancy shall happen within 70 days next preceding such election, in which case it shall be filled by election at the second succeeding general election, unless the governor of this State shall deem it advisable to call a special election therefor, which he is authorized hereby to do.
The governor of this State may make a temporary appointment of a senator of the United States from this State whenever a vacancy shall occur by reason of any cause other than the expiration of the term; and such appointee shall serve as such senator until a special election or general election shall have been held pursuant to law and the Board of State Canvassers can deliver to his successor a certificate of election. [Link]
I can't find anything stating that the special election cannot be held in November (if anything, the special election defaults to the November general election date) so I don't know where Christie's getting that statute from.
Although if he did hold it in November, he'd have to deal with this:
19:14-8. In the columns of each of the political parties which made nominations at the next preceding primary election to the general election and in the personal choice column, within the space between the two-point hair line rules, there shall be printed the title of each office to be filled at such election, except as hereinafter provided.
Such titles of office shall be arranged in the following order: electors of President and Vice-President of the United States; member of the United States Senate; Governor; member of the House of Representatives; ... [Link]
So he could be doing this so his name is still at the top of the ballot, a.k.a.: " ."

If you want to kick her out of graduation for wearing (what they think is) a goofy thing, that's fine and dandy. But why deny a diploma stating that she fulfilled her academic requirements over the past four years for doing something minute like this?
And if she's graduating at 17 and is from Alabama, all the more reason to be proud of her!

Yeah, I don't see Christie going the John Lynch route of appointing a Dem; 2016 notwithstanding.
Even though this is what I was fearing, when I saw Lautenberg speak at the Nov. 2012 NJ State Party party, he gave a pretty strong speech and his voice gave no impression that he was slowing down. But I guess this illness that he got recently came on and escalated rapidly. RIP to my now former Senator.

Kane for Senate: You just have to be a natural born citizen at least 35 years old, the fact that he resides in Mexico would not prevent him from seeking the Presidency.
...except for the part of Article II that says
No Person except a natural born Citizen, or a Citizen of the United States, at the time of the Adoption of this Constitution, shall be eligible to the Office of President; neither shall any person be eligible to that Office who shall not have attained to the Age of thirty five Years, and been fourteen Years a Resident within the United States.

Guy: Traffic light/speed cameras have the potential to encourage safer driving and reduce accidents.
Actually signing roads with speed limits closer to the actual design speed of the road probably does a lot more. There's plenty of roads that I use on my commute to work that have limits that are either 30 or 35 when traffic can safely move at 50 most of the time. Now, since people know they won't get pulled over for 5 to 10 above the limit, they'll just do that instead of following the limit.

There's a Dr. Frank H. Luce that was born on May 26, 1859; died Feb. 4, 1937 in Illinois [Link] . The death certificate links from his Wikipedia page ( [Link] ) lists date of death as "Feb. 1, 1937" (sometimes on these websites, the date defaults to the first of the month if no date is fount) And the plot thickens...
