Special election to fill the seat left vacant by the death of Joseph Rider Farrington.
The New York Times reported on 7/27/1954 that Hale campaigned for Hawaii to become a U.S. commonwealth (like Puerto Rico) rather than a state. The two major parties called for statehood.
