| Description |
BBC Constituency Profile:
The diverse seat of Bradford West in West Yorkshire reaches out from the less affluent Manningham area near the city centre, to the leafy, hilly suburbs of Clayton and Thornton. It is home to a large Asian/Asian British population, 43.3% are Pakistani - the highest proportion of all the constituencies of England and Wales, according to ONS 2011 Census figures.
While unemployment is high at 7%, it has a higher proportion of professional workers than Bradford East or South. Bradford University is here - one in 10 of the population is a student.
In 2010, Marsha Singh won for Labour with 45.3% of the votes; the Conservatives got 31.1%, Liberal Democrats 11.7% and BNP 3.4%. But at the March 29, 2012 by-election, following the resignation of Mr Singh - who later died - outspoken Iraq-war opponent George Galloway took the seat for the Respect party with 55.9% of the vote.
