The scenic seat of Bath is located in the south west of England. The city was designated a World Heritage site, and with several well-known attractions including Bath Abbey and the Royal Crescent, the area attracts more than three million visitors a year.

Alongside tourism, the local economy is also supported by the presence of two universities - the seat has one of the highest proportions of full time students of any constituency in England and Wales, according to ONS 2011 Census figures. Over a third of the population has a degree level qualification or above and more than one in four has a professional occupation.

The seat was Conservative from 1945 until 1992, when Liberal Democrat Don Foster, who is stepping down, unseated the party chairman Chris Patten. In 2010, Mr Foster held the seat with 56.6% of the vote; the Conservatives got 31.4%, Labour 6.9% and Greens 2.4%.
