Description |
Situated in western Cumbria is the remote coastal seat of Copeland. The constituency is mainly rural, hill-farming country and includes Scafell Pike, England's tallest mountain, and spectacular Lake District scenery. It is also home to the fishing port of Whitehaven and the Sellafield nuclear processing site, which employs over 10,000 people.
The Westlakes Science and Technology Park, to the south of Whitehaven, provides support to the nuclear industry, along with 1,600 jobs involving 70 diverse organisations. One in 20 of the population is employed in the supply of water, electricity, gas, steam and air conditioning - the highest proportion of all constituencies in England and Wales, according to ONS 2011 Census figures. Almost one in five works in manufacturing; one in 20 is an apprentice.
A Labour stronghold; in 2010 the party's Jamie Reed held the seat with 46% of the votes; Conservatives got 37.1%, Liberal Democrats 10.2% and BNP 3.4%.
Term End due to resignation
