Description

BBC Constituency Profile:

Situated on the mouth of the River Mersey, to the north of Liverpool is the seat of Bootle. The docks used to be the centre of its economy, which made them a target for Nazi German Luftwaffe bombers during WW2, earning Bootle the distinction of being the most bombed borough in the UK.

More recently the seat has been undergoing extensive regeneration, with new housing, new Health and Safety Executive Buildings and a new-look Strand Road. The population is mostly white - over three quarters describe themselves as Christian, the ninth highest of all constituencies in England and Wales, according to ONS 2011 Census figures.

More than a quarter - 28.5% - live in social housing. Unemployment is high at 7.2%. Joe Benton, Bootle's Labour MP for 25 years, is standing down. In 2010, he held the seat with 66.4% of the vote; Liberal Democrats got 15.1%, Conservatives 8.9% and UKIP 6.1%.
