Description |
BBC Constituency Profile:
The industrial east of the Paisley and Renfrewshire South seat takes in the southern half of Paisley itself, as well as the smaller Clydeside town of Johnstone. The constituency also covers large tracts of rural Renfrewshire, including a number of villages around the many lochs in the area.
Paisley grew up on the traditional linen trade and today the main sources of employment are in the electronics, communications, food, and oil and micro-technology industries. The southern part of the seat is less prosperous than the north, possibly due to it being further from the motorway and the airport.
Labour's Douglas Alexander, a former UK government cabinet member, won the former Paisley South seat in a 1997 by-election. He won the new Paisley and Renfrewshire South seat in 2005 with a majority of 16,614 votes.
