BBC Constituency Profile:
The town of Greenock, which recently achieved cultural status as the filming location for BBC school drama Waterloo Road, is the heart of Inverclyde. Along with Port Glasgow, the towns grew up on the shipbuilding industry and both have suffered from the decline of manufacturing and the loss of dockyard jobs.
The last remaining yard in the seat, Fergusons' Lower Clyde shipyard, was saved from closure in 2014, while the area has diversified into the computer and electronics sectors. The seat also includes the coastal towns of Gourock and Wemyss Bay.
The area was at one time represented by Dr Dick Mabon, who defected to the SDP in 1981 and, two years later was won by Labour's Norman Godman. Another Labour politician, David Cairns, won the seat in 2001 and, following his death in 2011, was succeeded by the party's Iain McKenzie.
