Description BBC Constituency Profile:

Edinburgh South contains some of the city's most impressive and desirable homes, especially in Morningside, Marchmont and Merchiston and Newington. Morningside has one of the highest concentrations of millionaires in the UK. Unsurprisingly, this is an affluent constituency, and more than half of its workers are managers or professionals.

Many constituents work in civil service jobs associated with the Scottish Parliament and almost half of all workers are employed in public administration, education and health.

The seat was held by Conservative Sir William Darling (whose great nephew is former Labour chancellor Alistair Darling) from 1945-57 and thereafter by Michael Ancram, son of the 12th Marquess of Lothian, until Labour's Nigel Griffiths won it in 1987. Mr Griffiths, who became embroiled in allegations concerning his private life and the Westminster expenses scandal, stood down and Labour's Ian Murray won the seat in 2010 by just 316 votes.
