BBC Constituency Profile:
Leith was independent of Edinburgh until the port area was incorporated into the city in 1920, despite the citizens voting five to one against the move. Now home to the Royal Yacht Britannia, the area has become synonymous with trendy quayside cafes, while one-time warehouses have been converted into expensive flats.
The north of the constituency, which once teemed with manual labourers, has become home to more managerial and professional workers and the seat also takes in Edinburgh's elegant New Town.
Labour has a record of electoral success in Edinburgh North and Leith, with previous incumbents including Malcolm Chisholm, who went on to become an MSP and Scottish minister. The seat was held in 2010 by Labour's Mark Lazarowicz, with a majority of 1,724 votes.
