Edinburgh East fans out from the heart of the Scottish capital, taking in landmarks like the castle, Arthur's Seat and the Palace of Holyroodhouse. Tourism is a vital industry in this constituency, also home to the Scottish Parliament building and national gallery, which is the country's second most-visited free attraction.

Edinburgh's tram system, which runs from the city centre to the airport, is up-and-running, although controversy over delays and cost over-runs with the project refuse to die down.

Veteran Labour MP Gavin Strang, who served as a minister in the Harold Wilson, James Callaghan and Tony Blair administrations, represented Edinburgh East for more than 40 years. He stood down ahead of the 2010 election, and the seat was won by Labour's Shelia Gilmore, with a majority of 9,181 votes.
