BBC Constituency Profile:
This constituency on England's south east coast has switched hands between the Conservatives and Labour but some polls suggest UKIP leader Nigel Farage might win a Westminster seat in South Thanet in May. The Kent seat includes the coastal resorts of Broadstairs and Ramsgate and the medieval town of Sandwich.
Like many seaside areas, it suffers some deprivation - Cliftonville West, like nearby Margate Central, rank among the most deprived wards in the country. According to the 2011 Census, the seat has more pensioners than average. The population is largely white. Unemployment is above average and education, health work and retail are major employment sectors. The former site of the pharmaceutical firm Pfizer has become a business park. Other employers include manufacturers like Fujifilm Speciality Ink Systems, the Port of Ramsgate and Thanet Offshore Wind Farm.
Conservative Laura Sandys won the seat in 2010, 7,617 votes ahead of Labour. UKIP came fourth but retained their deposit.
