BBC Constituency Profile:
Set against the backdrop of the Pentland hills, Edinburgh South West takes in city, suburban and rural areas. Along with middle-class districts of Colinton and Balerno, affluent housing developments have sprung up along the A70 road south to Lanark.
The seat is home to Napier University. One of its campus buildings, Craiglockhart Hydropathic, was a World War One hospital whose patients included war poets Wilfred Owen and Siegfried Sassoon. Heart of Midlothian Football Club's Tynecastle Stadium can be found in the Gorgie area.
One-time Conservative foreign secretary Sir Malcolm Rifkind represented the area (formerly Edinburgh Pentlands) until he lost to Labour's Lynda Clark in 1997. The former Scottish advocate general then stood aside in 2005 for Alistair Darling, whose Edinburgh Central seat was abolished as a result of boundary changes. The former chancellor, who led the campaign against Scottish independence, is standing down as an MP at the election.
