BBC Constituency Profile:
The economist Adam Smith and architect Robert Adam are among the most famous sons of Kirkcaldy, more recently represented at Westminster by former prime minister Gordon Brown, who grew up in the town. Nicknamed the "Lang Toun", the Fife settlement prospered through the Victorian boom in the textile, linoleum and coal industries. The service sector is now a significant employer.
Kirkcaldy is also home to Raith Rovers Football Club. The constituency, which occupies a long arc along the Firth of Forth, also takes in towns like Burntisland and Kinghorn. Cowdenbeath grew as a mining town in the late 19th century and most industry is now located on several industrial estates around the town.
The area has seen a number of constituency changes over the years. Mr Brown, who is standing down at the election, has held the Kirkcaldy and Cowdenbeath since it was created in 2005.
