Description BBC Constituency Profile:

This large, rural seat stretches from the River Bann and Lough Neagh in the west to the edge of Belfast. Its main towns are Antrim and Ballyclare. Belfast international airport is a major employer. There is also a big eel fishing site at Toome.

According to the Northern Ireland Statistics and Research Agency, the estimated population of South Antrim in 2013 was just over 100,000. It was the constituency with the lowest unemployment claimant count that year. This is a largely Protestant and unionist seat, with Catholics forming about a third of the population. Northern Ireland's two main unionist parties have battled for dominance.

The MP is William McCrea. He was first elected to the seat in a by-election in 2000 but in the 2001 general election he was defeated by David Burnside of the Ulster Unionist Party. Mr McCrea re-took the seat for the DUP in 2005.
