BBC Constituency Profile:
This coastal constituency is on the Ards Peninsula bordering the southern shores of Belfast Lough. It is predominantly Protestant and middle class and is one of Northern Ireland's most affluent areas. Tourism is important and the area contains attractions like the Ulster Folk and Transport Museum. Its main towns are Bangor, Holywood and Donaghadee.
The estimated population in 2013 was 90,000 and 61% of people were employed. Politically, Sir James Kilfedder, a Conservative and then independent unionist, held the seat from 1970 until his death in 1995.
The seat was then taken by the leader of the strongly anti-Good Friday Agreement United Kingdom Unionist Party, Bob McCartney, who held it until 2001 when he was succeeded by Lady Sylvia Hermon. She was the Ulster Unionists' only remaining MP after the 2005 election. However, she resigned from the party in 2010 and successfully contested that general election as an independent.
