Description

BBC Constituency Profile:

This rural constituency lies between the Sperrin Mountains in the west and Lough Neagh in the east. Its key towns are Cookstown, Magherafelt and Coalisland. The local economy is largely agricultural. Tourism centres on Lough Neagh, the largest freshwater lake in Great Britain and Ireland.

The estimated population of Mid Ulster in 2013 was nearly 101,000, with an even split between males and females. Two thirds of the population were Catholic at the latest census. Mid Ulster has a younger population compared to Northern Ireland as a whole. It also had the lowest number of redundancies in 2013 and the second lowest recorded crime rate in Northern Ireland.

William McCrea of the DUP gained the seat in 1983 and held it until 1997 when Sinn Féin's Martin McGuinness became the MP. He resigned his seat in December 2012. A by-election in March 2013 was won by Sinn Féin's Francie Molloy.
