Description

BBC Constituency Profile:

A Greater London seat on the Surrey borders, Sutton and Cheam is a prosperous constituency on the edge of the North Downs. Its proximity to central London, the M25 and Gatwick has helped attract some big employers, including Reed Business Information, Crown Agents Ltd and Sainsburys The area is popular with commuters and young families as it is well served by railway and bus links into London, has good schools and low crime rates.

According to the 2011 Census, the constituency is ethnically diverse, has lots of home owners and little social housing. Many rent homes privately. Unemployment is low here with many jobs in construction, wholesale and retail and health.

The coalition partners will be fighting it out over this seat. Lib Dem Paul Burstow won here in 2010 - just 1,608 votes ahead of the Conservatives, who had held the seat prior to 1997.
