BBC Constituency Profile:
A constituency of contrasts, Leyton and Wanstead combines inner-city, multi-cultural east London with suburban areas with large homes and green spaces. It has relatively high unemployment, and the proportion who told the 2011 Census they had never worked is almost double the average for England and Wales.
Many of those in work are employed in the public sector - mainly at Whipps Cross Hospital, which lies within the constituency, and with local authorities. Leyton and Wanstead has a large proportion of non-British white people (15.7% compared with national average of 4.4%) reflecting its popularity among those who have moved to the UK from eastern Europe following their home countries' accession to the EU.
Labour MP John Cryer retained the seat for Labour in 2010 with 43.6% of the vote. The Lib Dems had 27.6% and the Conservatives 22.2%
