Description BBC Constituency Profile:

Lewisham's third parliamentary seat has become a Labour stronghold after years of yo-yo-ing between Labour and the Conservatives. The original Lewisham West constituency changed hands seven times after World War 2 but has been Labour's since 1992, when the current MP, Jim Dowd, won it.

Now Lewisham West and Penge, the seat now includes more suburbs, embracing four Lewisham council wards and three from neighbouring Bromley. It stretches from Crystal Palace in the west to the fringes of Beckenham in the east, in a largely residential constituency. Affordable housing is a problem for the predominantly young population - but it has more than 1,000 estate agents - a percentage of the population exceeded in only 21 other constituencies.

Jim Dowd won in 2010 with 41.1%; the Lib Dems polled 28.1% and the Conservatives 25.5%. The minor parties garnered less than 6% between them.
