| Description |
The first president of the third republic, Adolphe Thiers, was seen as too republican for the monarchistic assembly elected in 1871.
He was therefore forced to resign in 1873. The republicans, who were in the minority for the first and last time in the third republic, decided to abstain. The monarchists decided on their side to pick up Patrice de Mac Mahon, a legitimist marshal, who would be President until the monarchy would be restaured in France. Without opposition, he was elected president.
The comeback of the monarchy should never happen, however; the division among monarchists and the overwhelming requests of the duke of Bordeaux to accept to be king led to the reinforcement of the republican form of the regime in 1875. In 1876, then again in 1877, the Republicans gained the majority in the National Assembly against the monarchists, who would never prevail again. Asked by the republican Gambetta "to admit" the results of the votes "or to quit" (Mac Mahon had in vain organized anticipated elections after the defeat of the monarchists in 1876), Mac Mahon decided finally to resign from the presidency in 1879.
