Description |
The french presidential election of 1879 was held after the resignation of incumbent President Patrice de Mac Mahon.
Mac Mahon, who had been elected in 1873, was a monarchist. After the defeat of the orleanist and legitimist coalition against the Republicans in the National Assembly election, he choosed to call for anticipated elections, which led to second victory of the Republicans. After a long struggle with both assemblies, Mac Mahon finally decided to resign from the Presidency.
Quickly, the most consensual candidate appeared to be Jules Grévy for the Republicans, while Léon Gambetta, the most virulent Republican, was seen as too divisive.
The conservative parties supported general Chanzy, who refused to be a candidate but was nevertheless supported by orleanists and legitimists. The bonapartists, third faction among conservatives, voted for Jules Grévy.
Jules Grévy was elected on the first ballot, votes cast as follows:
Voters 713
Needed 407
Jules Grévy 563
General Alfred Chanzy 99
Blank votes 42
Léon Gambetta 5
Paul de Ladmirault 1
Gaston de Galliffet 1
Henri d'Orléans, Duke of Aumale 1
