Description |
The French presidential election of 1895 took place after Casimir-Perrier's resignation as french President, only sixth months after his election.
Henri Brisson was the candidate of the radicals and of the left, while the moderate and conservatives were uncertain about whom to support.
Pierre Waldeck Rousseau had agreed to be a candidate, and was seen as the other leading contender for the election. However, the momentum he could have was slowed by his hesitations to run for real, rumours said that he had decided against running the day before the election, before changing his mind.
Felix Faure, Charles Dupuy and Emile Loubet were seen as potential alternatives if no majority would come out after the first ballot.
Felix Faure however, has announced his candidacy. Seen as a dark horse if Waldeck-Rousseau would run, he decided to campaign despite Pierre Waldeck-Rousseau's late candidacy.
On the first ballot, Brisson was leading, while Waldeck-Rousseau came as a distant third only. The votes were cast as follows:
Brisson 338
Faure 244
Waldeck-Rousseau 184
Cavaignac 6
Méline 4
Dupuy 4
Gervais 1
Rochefort 1
Canrobert 1
Loubet 1
Bourgeois 1
Blank 1
On the second ballot, Waldeck-Rousseau endorsed Felix Faure. The results were as follows:
Faure 430
Brisson 361
Others 9
