Description |
The Presidential election of 1958 was the first Presidential election of the french fifth Republic.
The french Constitution of 1958 originally organized the election of the french President through a "college", which was made out of Reprensatives, Senators, but also mayors and french "conseiller généraux", that means elected officials from the départements. The incumbent President René Coty didn't want to run, and Charles de Gaulle was the clear-cut favourite. He was only facing two opponents, George Marranne from the french communist party and Albert Chatelet, who was supported by the french non-communist left parties. Charles de Gaulle was largely elected on the first ballot.
