Description |
This was the first election following the 1868 constitution.
Holden was nominated at the state Republican convention in Raleigh on 2/26/1868.
The Conservative Party executive committee nominated Zebulon B. Vance for Governor around 3/1/1868 along with a full state ticket. Vance declined to run on 3/6/1868. The executive committee met again on 3/14 and nominated Ashe.
Goodloe announced his candidacy as an Independent Republican candidate on 4/9/1868.
Holden was impeached from office for suppressing the Ku Klux Klan and removed from office on 12/15/1870.
