Description |
This was a rigged election that Duvalier used to extend his term to 1967. However, he didn't wait until 1967. He had himself declared President for Life in 1964.
Rotberg (1971: 231-33) estimates that about 100,000 voters took part in the 1961 election, whereas the government claimed that the number of voters was 1,320,748. See also Ruddleand Gillette 1972: 90.
