Anthony Barber held the seat for the Conservatives for 13 years from 1951. Then, in 1964 Harold Walker won for Labour and was MP here for 33 years.
When Sir Harold retired in 1997, he was succeeded by Rosie Winterton. A swing to Labour of over 10% more than doubled Labour's majority to nearly 18,000.

After the arrests and convictions of Labour councillors in the Donnygate local government scandal, the Labour majority in 2001 fell to 12,000 and was further reduced in 2005 to 9,800, as the Liberal Democrats increased their share of the vote and pushed the Conservatives into third place.

At this election, the only boundary change sees the Edenthorpe, Kirk Sandall and Barnby Dun ward, which the seat shared with Doncaster North, move entirely within the Central division's boundaries. This constituency covers most of the town of Doncaster, a major rail and commercial centre in South Yorkshire which was once surrounded by an important coalfield.

Doncaster was never itself a mining town. Rail and engineering were its two major industries but both have suffered in recent years, with hundreds of jobs recently axed by rail maintenance firm Jarvis. A large new industrial site is situated just outside the town.
