Description |
Race between popular first district congressman Louis Wyman and former state insurance commissioner John Durkin. Durkin took advantage of a huge flaw in the Republican's armor: he had introduced Ruth Farkas to the people at C.R.E.E.P. (who recieved an Ambassadorship to Luxembourg after contributing $250,000 to the committee). The resulting election was well within the margin of error: the Secretary of State claimed Durkin had a 10 vote lead, the Republican ballot commission claimed Wyman had a 2 vote lead.
The Democratic US Senate tried to seat Durkin, but were unable to overcome a Republican filibuster. The election was rerun in September 1975, and Durkin won handily.
