BBC Profile:
The Conservatives held the old seat of Manchester Wythenshawe in the 1950s but then Labour held sway between 1964 and 1997. Labour's Paul Goggins was elected to represent the present-day constituency in 1997 and regained the seat in 2001 and 2005. At the last election, he secured a 10,827 majority.
There are no boundary changes affecting this seat.
Wythenshawe and Sale East is a constituency whose two parts are quite different. Wythenshawe, an overspill estate from the City of Manchester, is working-class, while the western part of the seat includes Sale, a comfortable middle class part of Cheshire from which many commute into Manchester.
The modern story of Wythenshawe began in 1926, when Manchester council took over the Tatton estate and started to make plans for the first municipal garden city in Great Britain.
The growth of Manchester Airport and the success of housing and social regeneration have brought new opportunities to the local area.
The government is currently consulting on the expansion of air traffic to meet rising demand at Manchester Airport, part of which is in the constituency. A record 22 million passengers fly from the airport annually.
