The new seat is comprised of the eastern half of the Worsley seat and the southern half of Eccles. Worsley and Eccles South is now entirely within the City of Salford, all Wigan Borough wards that were previously in Worsley having moved to Leigh or Bolton West.
Labour has held Worsley since its creation in 1983. Terry Lewis retired at the 2005 general election after representing Worsley for 18 years with a majority of 11,787. At the election the Labour candidate, Barbara Keeley replaced him, with a majority of 9,368.
