Description BBC Profile:
Labour has held the constituency of Wigan since 1918. First elected in a 1999 by-election, Labour's Neil Turner regained the seat in 2001 and 2005, latterly with a majority of 11,767. He is not contesting the seat in 2010.

At the election, the seat gains five part-wards from Makerfield, and the part-ward of Ince from Leigh. To find out what might have happened had this boundary change been in force at the last election, see a notional - or estimated - result below.

Wigan is mainly urban, but the constituency is more than the town itself: on the constituency's northern edge, former pit villages such as Crooke, Standish and Haigh are surrounded by wonderful countryside.

After the post-war boom of the 1950s and 1960s the coal and cotton industries declined; that decline became precipitous in the 1980s and the economy has only just begun to recover.

In 2007 around 700 jobs went when Great Universal Stores (GUS) moved to Oldham. The council has made efforts to attract new industries into the town. Wigan has the Tidy Britain national group and the Tote. It also has Milliken, an American carpet company that brought to Britain cutting-edge computer technology for the carpet industry.
