Description BBC Profile:
For a decade after this constituency was created, it sent Conservative members to Parliament, but Labour took the seat in 1992 by a narrow margin. Labour's Helen Southworth has held the seat since 1997, securing a 3,515 majority in 2005, but she is not contesting the election this time around.

At the election, the seat gains the part-wards of Bewsey and Whitecross and Whittle Hall from Warrington North, in exchange for the part-ward of Fairfield and Howley. To find out what might have happened had this boundary change been in force at the last election, see a notional - or estimated - result below.

This Cheshire constituency is the more affluent of the Warrington two. There is some industry in the seat, mainly chemical and service industries, but it generally consists of quiet residential areas. High-income families narrowly outnumber traditional blue-collar workers.

The area benefits from good transport links, sited at the crossroads of the M6 and M62 motorways, mid-way between the cities of Manchester and Liverpool and on the route of the West Coast Main Line. The canals now support the leisure and tourism industry rather than the industries for which they were built.
